NHS Sore Throat Test and Treat
The Sore Throat Test and Treat scheme allows patients who have a sore throat to have a consultation with a pharmacist to assess what kind of condition they have. Around 90% of sore throats are caused by a viral infection which will usually get better on its own after a few days. We can advise on appropriate treatments to manage the pain if this is the case.
If, however, we suspect that there may be a bacterial cause to your condition, we can swab the back of the throat and test it. This will reveal whether there is a bacterial infection present and if so, we can supply a course of antibiotics to treat the condition. This service is only available to patients aged 6 years and above.
If you have any questions about this service, please contact the pharmacy.
